Blue Pen was founded in 2015 by Emily Haynes. After spending hours each day stuck in traffic for almost two years, traveling across the bay bridge from Oakland to her job at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, she started to lose feeling in her legs. She decided to change the way she worked, the result of which is Blue Pen, a company that builds on the editorial development, project management skills, and contacts she has acquired over the past 15 years in the book business. Blue Pen aims to help clients and authors in every stage of project development, from  brainstorming a rough idea to executing a polished draft, as well as managing the various stages of book design, review, and production before final publication.

Emily Haynes knew she wanted to be an editor from the time she took her first writing course at Barnard College. Almost twenty years later, she has edited over one hundred books, including half a dozen New York Times bestsellers, as well as numerous national and indie bestsellers. Her editorial life began at The Ellen Levine Agency (which has since been folded into Trident Media Group), continued at Penguin for five years, and then at Chronicle Books for another six. She is the co-author of the picture book, Ganesha's Sweet Tooth. She lives in Oakland, California with her fiancé and their son.
